The Fisherman’s Tale

“Why didn’t we ask her?” Lincoln asked as the trio sat in the back of the bus, wondering where they would stop. “I mean, Belton isn’t a big town, but we have no idea where we’re going right now.”

“I have a feeling the woman she was with had something to do with it, her partner, Max,” Badrah added. She had been watching Ashley closely the entire time, and she realized that the detective was protective of them around her partner, and Badrah had no idea why.

“Still, how do we find one man in all of this city?” Lincoln asked.

They sat in silence for a moment as the bus chugged forward, each trying to think of the best course of action. In a few hours, the sun would begin to set, and they would have to head home. The radio in the front of the bus rattled as the host spoke excitedly to his first-time callers and laughed along with them. Ian quickly tapped Badrah’s arm.

“I know how we’ll find him; we just need a phone.”

They stopped at the next phone booth they spotted and dropped off the bus. They all tried cramping into the booth, but Lincoln stayed out while Ian and Badrah listened in on the call as it rang. It stalled for a while, but finally someone on the other side picked up.

“Hi there, this is Marion Belton, from Radio Belton. What can I do for you?”

“Uh…” Ian blanked for some reason, and Badrah quickly took charge.

“This is Amelia Grey; I’m calling from Wincher street. I’m a long-time listener, first-time caller, and I have to say, I love your show.”

“Thank you so much, Amelia! If you’d like to call in to the radio, we would like to hear from you.”

“Uh, I called 'cause I was working on a piece for the local newspaper, and I was looking for information, and I was wondering if you could help me out. We would be happy to cite your station as a source in the newspaper if you can give us the information we need.” Lincoln and Ian stared at Badrah in shock, seeing as she had changed her voice entirely and sounded like a completely different person.

“Sure, as long as it’s something we have,” the producer replied in an excited voice. Badrah knew she caught him, especially with the thought that he would be in the newspaper, which would get him really pumped up, and he would move heaven and earth to get in the papers. A small part of her felt bad for lying to him, but it was what she had to do to get the information they needed. She cleared her throat into her arm, then brought the phone to her lips again.

“I need the name, and maybe where I could find the fisherman who found the wreckage by the river.”

The trio dropped off at the address which was given to them. It wasn’t much of an address, just a description of a little shack that was out in the middle of nowhere.
